Xanga, myspace, facebook...there's just too many of these sites now
days to even keep up! I'm going to have to start making some choices
here in the near future as to which ones I'm going to continue with.
Xanga has nice colors, facebook has cool picture options and
myspace...well, myspace is just a little creepy.
On to business - a big long post for your Friday enjoyment. First off,
you need look no further than this little video on Youtube
to see the craziness that was LCD Soundsystem last week at the
Showbox...
LCD is always a huge dance party and a fun time. A big thanks to this
guy for hooking me up with a ticket for the Seattle show since the
"disco infiltrator" decided to skip Portland on this pass
down the West Coast.
I put a lot of music up here, but have been terrible about books, so
here's one that I'm really enjoying right now: Special Topics In
Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl.
It's been a long time since I read
something that was both suspenseful and totally hilarious. It has
two-faced teenage cliques (think "Heathers") academic snobbery, raging hormones and of course, murder.
Each chapter is named after a famous novel or poem, there are
tons of literary references and the plot follows the same path as
"Lolita." Basically, if you were an English major than this is
right up your line, but anyone that likes a good mystery will get into it. While I'm only a little over halfway through, I can
already tell that it's a keeper. Give it a shot.
Last but not least, this week the new Bjork is out and I'm off to go
get myself a copy of "Volta" this afternoon. If you haven't yet heard the Timbaland produced"Earth
Intruders" you're in for a treat as I am posting it here! Enjoy.
I've been meaning to do a Deerhunter
post for a while now but have been too busy doing less important things
(i.e. applying for teaching jobs) rather than shamelessly rocking out
to this album.
Since I'm not very good at selling this stuff to you folks, I pulled a few quotes from one of my favorite sites, Fluxblog. Here's their take:
"alternates between ethereal drones
and intense Kraut-punk-shoegazer hybrids before culminating in a cut
that seamlessly combines both extremes"
"like something David Bowie might have come up with during his coke psychosis phase"
"follows a tight, deliberate trajectory that begins with a state of eerie calmness and ends with a headlong rush into oblivion."
--Fluxblog So there you go. Much better said than I could have done. Here's an Mp3 of the title song...
The Iroc-Z in the background and the gold chains pretty much say it
all. The Cool Kids
are all about kicking it old school! Think 1988. Their debut arrives in
a few months and is already shaping up to be the perfect summer party
soundtrack. Here's one of the tunes I've had on heavy rotation this
morning... "88"
James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem was interviewed for Pitchfork's "Guest List"
column the other day and I thought this part was pretty hilarious. Maybe
it's because I'm a dog owner now that I feel like I can totally relate...
">> Best Thing I Did This Year
It really depends. Making the album, making the 45:33 comp,
making a bunch of music-- since I'm about to go on tour, that means I'm
not going to be able to make anything for about a year.
But then, I also got this totally amazing dog, which is more of a
personal thing. She's a french bulldog named Petunia. She's 15 pounds
of snuggle, just made to be a companion. Some dogs have jobs. You know
what I mean, they'll be like, "Well this dog's a fetching dog, and this
dog likes to carry things." Well, this dog doesn't do fucking shit. It
likes to sit down and be sitting on you. And the great thing about it
is, when you walk the dog, it has the exact same temperature and
weather sensitivity as a human. So, if it's cold and you're fucking
bummed about it being cold outside, the dog is bummed, too. You open
the door and you're like, "Man, this dog better piss and shit right
now." And the dog is thinking the exact same thing. The dog is like, "I
am gonna piss and shit so fast!" So the dog runs outside and does his
business and then trucks to the door. And if it's hot out, the dog
doesn't really want to go far. She's really made me super happy and
helped me calm down, the little monkey."
You can check out the rest of the article here. Also, a big shout-out and thanks to Paul for getting me a ticket to the
Seattle show in May! Here's a great tune off the new album for a Friday
afternoon...
